GRS was contracted by Barnum Timber Company for the design and implementation of an integrated resource management GIS. GRS performed a needs assessment and designed GIS and tablular database table structures store base map and resource themes.
GRS digitized of all drafted base maps covering Barnum's 50,000 acres of ownership. Other base-map themes were developed using a variety of public and private data sources including USGS DLG data, GPS, and USGS 7.5' quadrangles. Digitized contours were used to generate the slope and aspect polygons. Ortho-corrected SPOT imagery was used as a backdrop to update the transportation theme and harvest boundary locations. Over 35 3-D GPS points were collected to ascertain more accurate locations of section and ownership boundaries. GRS foresters performed an inventory cruise and collected additional plot information specific to client needs. GRS integrated the cruise data into the GIS and developed an integrated system for cruise data management and reporting. This digital inventory sytem enabled GRS foresters to accuratley predict forest growth and provides a complete inventory that facilitates proper forest analyses and management.
